To get acquainted with it you should just come here. It is not only a woman's name but also a nice town Lida is a town in the west of Belarus, 120 km from Poland to the west and 40 km from Lithuania to the north. The population of the town is approximately 110000 people. It's situated at the crossroads of the railways and the highways 100 km from Vilnius and 170 km from Minsk. Administratively Lida is the center of a district in Grodno region. There are several nice legends about the origin of this name. Here is one of them. In the 14th century, there was the Grand Lithuanian Princedom on the territory of modern Belarus. The leader of that Princedom the Grand Prince Gedemin built a castle and founded a town for the protection of the boundaries of his lands. The prince had a daughter Lydia (Lida). She was incredibly beautiful. Once, one of the knights of the Teutonic Order saw Lydia in the castle's window and her beauty struck him. Naturally, he asked her to marry him, but she refused him. She did not want to be the wife of an enemy. "If you don't want to be my wife - you will be nobody's wife", said the knight, captured the castle and ordered to brick up Lydia in the castle's walls. Three days and three nights the girl's tears were dropping from the wall of the castle. It gave a start for the river, which flowed, by the castle. It is only an abridged variant of the long and lyric legend. As we mentioned above, in the 14th century, Lida was a part of the Grand Lithuanian Princedom - it was one of the most powerful state of the medieval Europe. The capital was Novogrudok (50km away from Lida). By that time Catholicity had been accepted in our land. The Grand Lithuanian Princedom had existed till 16th century, then united with Poland and founded the state known as "Rzecz Pospolita". In 200 years, in 1795 Lida entered the North-Western region of the Russian Empire. It lasted till 1918, when the Belarussian People's Republic was founded and existed for a week. That was very dark and tangled times for our people. After signing Riga's peaceful Agreement in 1921 Lida became part of Poland again and remained there till 1939. That year Molotov and Ribbentrop signed the famous pact, in the result of which Lida passed to the Soviet Union. During 50 years, Belarus was the Union Republic of the Soviet Union. Since 1991, our town belongs to the independent state of Belarus. You could see Lida passed from one hands to the others many times. All that influenced the building of the town and the structure of the population of Lida greatly. There are about 40% of the Poles, 40% of the Belorussians and 20% of other nations in Lida now. According to it, about 41% are the Catholics and about 40% are the Orthodox. Moreover there are several hundred Evangelicals and Jewish. In consequence of the numerous wars and calamities only the Old Castle and Farny Kostyol (Catholic Church) remained since the times of the foundation of Lida. Besides those historical monuments there are two more Catholic churches and two Orthodox churches in Lida. One of the Orthodox Churches was restored quite recently in the premise where planetarium had been for forty years. There is a wonderful monument to Francysk Skaryna - our famous Belorussian writer, philosopher and the first bookprinter in Belarus. It is in the center of the town. The inhabitants of Lida never forget about World War II, therefore there are several monuments devoted to the defenders of our town from German Nazi. However, five years ago the new generation of the Germans helped to build a very nice and comfortable district for almost 900 families (the so called South Town) in Lida. It gave dwelling for many of us and entered the structure of Lida perfectly. Lida is a really pretty city with rich and interesting history and with nice people.
